Once infected, Aedes aegypti are capable of transmitting zika, dengue, chikungunya, and yellow fever virus through their bite. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes prefer to stay in urban areas where they have easy access to their preferred food source (humans) and to standing water in man-made containers. Currently, the only invasive mosquito in the District is Aedes aegypti, also known as the yellow fever mosquito. For more information, please visit our vector page.
